# Uninstalling

> Remove the Socketchat program, your profile and any server data.

Socketchat has no uninstall command. Remove its files by hand, using the lists below.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Deleting your profile deletes your identity, your room keys and your message history on this computer. It cannot be undone. Leave your rooms first with `/leave` if you want the other members to see you go.

## The program

**macOS and Linux**

```bash theme={"dark"}
rm ~/.local/bin/socketchat
```

If you built from source, the program is `~/.cargo/bin/socketchat` instead; `cargo uninstall socketchat` removes it. A server set up as a service also has a copy at `/usr/local/bin/socketchat`.

**Windows**

In PowerShell:

```powershell theme={"dark"}
Remove-Item "$HOME\.local\bin\socketchat.exe"
```

The installer also added `~/.local/bin` to your PATH. Other tools often install there too, so leave that in place unless you know nothing else uses it. On macOS and Linux, the installer wrote `~/.local/bin/env` and `~/.local/bin/env.fish` and a line that loads them in your shell's startup files, such as `~/.profile`, `~/.bashrc` or `~/.zshrc`. On Windows, it added the folder to your user PATH.

## Your profile

Your profile holds your keys, rooms and messages:

| System | Profile folder |
| - | - |
| macOS | `~/Library/Application Support/socketchat` |
| Linux | `~/.local/share/socketchat` |
| Windows | `%APPDATA%\socketchat\data` |

Delete that folder to remove them. If you set `SOCKETCHAT_HOME`, the profile is in that folder instead.

## Server data

If you ran a server, its data folder holds its database, certificate and files:

| System | Default server folder |
| - | - |
| macOS | `~/Library/Application Support/socketchat-server` |
| Linux | `~/.local/share/socketchat-server` |
| Windows | `%APPDATA%\socketchat-server\data` |

A server set up as in [Cloud server](/hosting/cloud-server) keeps its data in `/var/lib/socketchat` instead. Remove that setup with:

```bash theme={"dark"}
sudo systemctl disable --now socketchat
sudo rm /etc/systemd/system/socketchat.service
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo rm /usr/local/bin/socketchat
sudo userdel socketchat
```

Then delete `/var/lib/socketchat` once you are sure you no longer need a backup. Once the server's data is gone, every room on it is gone for every member.

## Files you saved

Files you saved with `/save` stay where you saved them, usually your Downloads folder.
