# Updating

> Get the newest Socketchat by running the installer again.

Run the installer again. It downloads the newest release and replaces the program; your profile and rooms stay as they are.

**macOS and Linux**

```bash theme={"dark"}
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -LsSf https://github.com/sachio222/socketchat_v4/releases/latest/download/socketchat-installer.sh | sh
```

**Windows**

```powershell theme={"dark"}
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -c "irm https://github.com/sachio222/socketchat_v4/releases/latest/download/socketchat-installer.ps1 | iex"
```

Close the chat screen first, then check the new version:

```bash theme={"dark"}
socketchat --version
```

If you built from source, run the same `cargo install --locked --git ...` command again.

## Updating a server

A server that runs as a service needs one more step: copy the new program into place and restart it. See [Update the server](/hosting/cloud-server#update-the-server). Back up the data folder first.

## Mixing versions

Apps and servers from different releases work together. A newer server serves older apps, and a newer app talks to an older server, so you can update the server before or after your members. When a feature needs a newer server, the app says so and the rest keeps working.

[CHANGELOG.md](https://github.com/sachio222/socketchat_v4/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md) lists what changed in each release.
